How to choose a auto shop
Always get a written estimate
Ask for a written estimate that breaks out parts, labor and fees before any work begins. In many states, a shop must get your approval before going over the estimate, and you can ask for your old parts back. Never sign a blank or open-ended repair order.
Look for certified technicians
Many good mechanics hold ASE certifications, which show they passed tests in specific repair areas. Body shops may have collision repair training or factory certifications for certain brands. Ask which certifications apply to the work your car needs.
Ask about the warranty
A good shop stands behind its work with a written warranty on both parts and labor. Ask how long it lasts, how many miles it covers, and whether it is honored elsewhere if you have a problem while traveling. Make sure the terms are printed on your invoice.
Understand the diagnostic fee
Most shops charge to diagnose a problem, especially a check engine light, because it takes a technician's time and equipment. Ask what the fee covers and whether it is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. Be cautious of a shop that names a big repair without explaining how they found the problem.
Watch for pressure and upsells
A shop should explain which repairs are urgent for safety and which can wait. Be wary of anyone who pressures you to decide on the spot, or pushes services like fluid flushes well ahead of your owner's manual schedule. For a large repair, it is reasonable to get a second opinion.
What it typically costs
These are typical US price ranges, and prices in your area and for your specific vehicle may be higher or lower.
Engine size, the oil your car requires and whether a new filter and a quick safety check are included affect the price.
Rotors that need replacing, the type of vehicle and premium parts push the cost higher.
Some shops credit this fee toward the repair if you approve the work.
Vehicle size, pet hair, stains and add-ons like paint correction raise the price.
Common questions
How often do I need an oil change?
Follow the oil change interval in your owner's manual, since it varies by car and oil type. Many newer cars using synthetic oil can go well past the old 3,000-mile rule, and some have a reminder that tracks oil life for you. Hard use like towing, lots of short trips or extreme heat can mean changing it sooner.
Do I have to use the dealer to keep my warranty?
No. Under federal law, having routine maintenance done at an independent shop does not void your new-car warranty. Keep receipts showing the work was done on schedule with the right parts and fluids. Repairs covered by the warranty itself still go through the dealer.
Can I choose my own body shop after an accident?
Yes, in most cases you can choose where your car is repaired, even if your insurer recommends a particular shop. Get an estimate from the shop you trust and share it with the insurance adjuster. Ask the shop what kind of replacement parts the estimate uses, since that can vary.
How dark can my window tint be in your area?
It depends on your state, since each state sets its own limits for the windshield and front side windows. Rear windows often have looser rules than the front. A reputable tint shop in your area should know the local limits and tell you if a film is too dark to be legal.
How much does a tow cost?
A short local tow often costs around $75 to $150, with extra charges per mile beyond a set distance. Night, weekend, heavy-duty and off-road tows usually cost more. Check whether your auto insurance or a roadside assistance plan covers towing before you pay out of pocket.
How often should I rotate my tires?
Most vehicles need a tire rotation about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, often done at the same time as an oil change. Check your owner's manual for your car's exact interval. Regular rotation helps tires wear evenly and last longer.
